Last week I got into a spirited debate with a close, personal friend about peanut butter. I’ll welcome opposing views on literally anything. It’s healthy. The conversation focal point rallied back and forth between creamy and chunky peanut butter. My adversary allied with creamy, and I with chunky. Creamy is more common, there’s no doubt about it. That’s what we all grow up eating. Everyone loves creamy peanut butter, myself included. Let me make that abundantly clear: I love creamy peanut butter. That’s been a common misconception since this back and forth first got going. I’ll eat creamy peanut butter all day long right in your face.
But I like chunky peanut butter more than I like creamy peanut butter. It brings a little more variety to the table. It keeps me on my toes. It speaks to me; it tells me “I know how much you enjoy the standard creamy peanut butter, but what do ya think of this?!” When your food keeps you guessing, that’s when you know it’s special. And that’s how I feel about chunky peanut butter. The poll results revealed the sad truth in that many people are afraid to try chunky peanut butter; they’re afraid to stray away from what they know, and I can understand that. Change is scary. But it’s clear that the poll results were invalid because of the number of people that undoubtedly voted “Creamy” when they’ve never had anything other than that.
It’s important to note that there’s a MAJOR difference between Chunky and Crunchy peanut butter. I’m not privy to the recipe and/or preparation of each, but I can tell you that when it comes to Skippy (the #1 PB brand obviously) I love the Super Chunk but absolutely loathe the Super Chunk Extra Crunchy. They seem similar but could not be more different. The Super Chunk is exciting and delicious. The Extra Crunchy is dry and not good at all. The containers are very similar too, so shop carefully. Get out there and try something new one of these days, maybe even Chunky Peanut Butter. Nothing wrong with a little chunkiness AMIRITE?!
Super Chunk me, bitccccccc.
PS – Natural peanut butter stinks.
